OUTREACH PROGRAMS

OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Our congregation gives to many charitable organizations such as the Montgomery County “Thanksgiving Baskets” charity, delivering groceries to several needy families during the Holidays, Annual Crop Walk, Thanksgiving in February, "Rebuilding Together" in Montgomery County, feeding Wesley students, etc.

We also take a collection for the Board of Child Care Children’s ministry at Christmas.

In March 2008, we sent a work team to help Katrina survivors in Mississippi.  In 2009, we sent rebuilding teams as part of "Rebuilding Together," a Montgomery County charity that helps to repair the homes of needy seniors and others in our county.  Come join us at our Silent Auction to raise funds in March of each year.

Home Touch

This program is designed to help us stay in touch with members, friends, and others in the community who, for whatever reason, are not able to attend Sunday morning church services.

Through the Home Touch ministry, you will receive a mailing at the beginning of each week  which will contain:

(1) a copy of the previous Sunday’s bulletin;

(2) a sheet with a recommended scripture reading, thought for the week, a brief story, and a closing prayer all related to the Sunday worship service; and

(3) an activity page with daily Bible readings for the week as well as activities

Pastor Young and Barbara Reed will be hsuch as cross-word puzzles, unscramble the words, word finds, etc.eading the program.  If you know of someone who would like to be included in this program, please contact Pastor Young.

Grove Relief Update

Many thanks for funding and carrying our our recent project with "Rebuilding Together of Montgomery County"!

Check out the Grove Relief 'blog' online at http://judy_young.livejournal.com to see photos and read the interview with the family we helped, or pick up a "hard" copy at church.

Gaithersburg HELP

We support Gaithersburg HELP as an on-going ministry to those in need.  In addition to food collections, we provide monetary support through a yearly donation collected at our Interfaith Thanksgiving Service.  Gaithersburg HELP is a volunteer managed and run program that maintains a food pantry from which food is dispensed to local needy clients.  The organization depends on local groups, including many churches, for food donations.  Our church has been a faithful contributor to Gaithersburg HELP for many, many years.

Local families in need depend upon your donations of non-perishable food items such as canned goods, cereals, pasta, peanut butter, tuna, etc.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

In November everyone is asked to join us in

"The Power of a Simple Gift".

HOW TO PACK A SHOE BOX GIFT:

1.  Use an empty shoe box (standard size please - smaller prefered) - Wrap you box and the lid separately.

2.  Determine the age and sex of a child you want to collect gifts for.  Mark your box - labels provided at the church.

3.  Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child.  i.e. toys, school supplies, hygiene items, hard candies, and other small gifts.  ( no liquids, lotions, chocolate, food, glass, aerosol cans, war-related items, etc.)

4.  Place $7. for shipping on top of the gifts in the shoe box.

5.  Place a rubber band around each box and drop off at the church.

Volunteer(s) Needed

We are seeking a volunteer or numerous volenteers to take over the Communion Service set-up!  It is only one Sunday a month.  If interested for one month of every month, please call Judy or contact church's office.

Lord's Table Soup Kitchen

WGUMC is one of the original members of the organizing committee to plan and support a Soup Kitchen at St. Martins Catholic Church in Gaithersburg.  The Lord’s Table, which has been in operation for 15+ years relies on local churches, schools, charitable organizations, and local companies to provide food, and to cook and serve the food five days a week, 10 months out of every year.  Approximately 70 clients (men, women, and children) are served each day.

The 3rd Thursday of each month, our church, led by Jean Clark, takes over the task of preparing, serving and cleaning up the meal, with lots of help from so many friends.

Ideally we need 10 people so we could use your help!  The time is 1:00 - 5:00pm, 1:00 - 3:00 for preparation and 3:30 - 5:00pm for serving and clean up but you can come for only 1 hour if that is all you can spare.  Contact Pastor Young or Jean Clark for more information.

Bulk non-perishable food items are welcomed donations to the Soup Kitchen!

Annual Crop Walk

Each year our church participates in the annual Crop Walk which helps feed the hungry.  We are not sure of the date for this year, but expect it to occur in the springtime.  In the past we have walked the campus at NIST or at Seneca State Park.  We will post here when we learn this year's sight along with more information on how you can participate.
